As a fan of the original Blade & Soul game it will be hard not to compare the two titles, especially since it really looks so much like it, and to top it off I will be referencing the other, very successful, NCsofts game transition by Netmarble that at the time changed the mobile MMORPGs: Lineage 2: Revolution

To sum it up quickly, for a fan, this transition is a spit to the face, however if we ignore the fact that this game has a great predecessor and review while pretending it is a stand-alone mobile MMORPG, we get a pretty decent PVP focused action MMO.

In this review we will talk about (click to scroll):

  • PVP
  • PVE
  • Endgame
  • Cash shop
  • whether it's actually a mobile game

Early Game

First step - character creation is absolutely satisfyng with all the presets and sliders. I didn't look too deep into it since I try to represent the way I look irl and I have the preset A look, but for those who like to play around there is plenty of room to create a character you would like.

The game starts with the storyline from the original game, so if you have played the oginial game the entire story quest is just skip, auto, skip, auto, skip, but if you haven't played the original, the story is worth reading, since it's both well-written and animated well.

Right after that the game introduces you into a beautiful looking world, which in a lot of cases seems to look even better than PC version, though at a cost of your phone heating like the 9th circle of hell and battery drainage where you can see the percent go down every 20 seconds. This caused me to lower the settings down immediately to make the game playable. And after that it's the auto life. All you have to do is turn on Netflix and keep clicking that auto every minute or so.

PVP

As I am writing this review the 1v1 arena is still "coming soon" so I cannot comment on that just yet, but field PVP is available and is in fact important. Hunting in PVP zones is much more efficient than hunting in peace zones since the XP and Silver drops pretty much double. Using the boosts get you leveling real fast, however it turns from auto hunting into micromanaging since there is always someone from the other faction trying to mess you up!

As for PVP itself, even though it's not as good as PC version it still definitely is one of the best PVP experiences currently in the mobile MMO market. Similarly to the PC version, attacking after countering or using iframes is the most important things in battle. If you simply mash the buttons randomly you will get deleted.

Objective fighting has always been the most fun fighting, and this game tries to make PVP have a purpose which is pretty great. Also it seems like the future will bring even more interesting modes for pvp like 30 vs 30 battleground and so on.
Sadly The skills and items matter too much in the game and often you will be defeated even if you do everything right.

For a PVP focused game, Blade & Soul Revolution delivers satisfying experience, but apart from that.. well.. keep reading.

PVE

When it comes to PVE it quickly becomes a big disappoinment. The game has a couple of dungeons that are interesting to run once, and once you out BR them it just becomes a daily auto repetition. She "daily" dungeon feels like work you have been doing for years second time you run it, field boss grinding reminds me of terrible EYOU games and the "training ground" is just a copy from Lineage 2 revolution "hot time" where you get a certain time in the dungeon to get bonus xp and loots, and well, auto farm..

If you are not autofarming in PVP zones then all you have to do every hour is to go back to town to replenish "stamina" (yes the game has stamina), which honestly is not too horrible since it actually tries to keep you in the game a little bit instead of shoving that tablet into a drawer and checking on it after a week. Once every hour or so, depending on how fast you gain xp, you deplete your stamina. In order to regain it you have to go back to town or guild grounds and chill till you regain it. Or you can use special items to do that quickly..

But apart from stamina and PVP auto farming, it's just auto farming not different from other games.

Endgame

You reach the endgame fairly quickly and it is exactly what you would imagine. Daily quests, weekly quests, battle pass quests, event quests and so on. The big focus on the entire game is fighting for a place to auto farm at, but you are not forced to do it so if you want you can skip pvp entirely, but if you do there is really nothing there. The interesting content seems to be the upcoming 30 vs 30, faction wars and 16 man raids and hopefully it will get better later on, but right now, there isn't much.

Is it mobile?

After trying to run the game on 5 different emulators, all attempts failed, so I am not sure if you can run the game on PC at all, though rumor has it, you can. (Let me know in the comments if you managed to make it work, and which one you used).
But apart from that I wouldn't call the game mobile. The game makes it so that being online for more time will give you more progress, and once again dedicating your whole phone to a game is not an option for most. Micromanaging is always done better on PC especially since it can run in the background.

in Conclusion:

2 weeks into the game and I am quitting it. Definitely will be trying it once it releases in west but for now it's hard to find something to stick to. As a free to play player you quickly endup on the losing end and being unable to effectively participate in PVP pretty much kills the purpose since auto farming is far from as good as Lineage 2 revolution in which you would have to combine teammates and passives, or Lineage 2 M in which every single stat mattered. In this one it's really as boring as it can get.

In the current market of mobile MMORPGs it's really hard to put Blade & Soul Revolution anywhere. It might be very pretty looking, but it's not the prettiest, it might have a good pvp combat, but it's not as good as Lumia Saga and maybe not even as Dragon Raja. It might have challenging dungeons ,but that's only one time deal which really makes this game a jack of all trades, but master of none.
And the worst thing is, they tried to appeal to Blade & Soul fans and instead butchered it.

Hopefully the game will get better in the future, but for now, I quit it as happily as my last job.

Thanks for reading, and let me know if you played the game and enjoyed/hated it in the comments bellow
